Review
Rurouni Kenshin: Origins is a thrilling live-action adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki’s beloved manga. Set during the early Meiji period in Japan, the film introduces us to Himura Kenshin — a former assassin known as "Battลsai" who has vowed never to kill again. Now a wanderer wielding a reverse-blade sword, he seeks redemption by protecting the innocent.
Takeru Satoh delivers a powerful and nuanced performance as Kenshin, balancing the character’s quiet resolve with explosive action. The choreography in fight scenes is exceptional — fast-paced, grounded, and visually striking without relying heavily on CGI. Each sword fight feels personal and precise.
Director Keishi ลtomo blends historical authenticity with dramatic flair, creating a believable world filled with moral conflict, political unrest, and personal transformation. Emi Takei, as Kaoru, adds emotional depth to the story, though her character sometimes takes a backseat to the action.
The film doesn’t shy away from exploring Kenshin’s dark past, but it also offers hope and redemption a theme that resonates throughout. Combined with strong cinematography and a stirring score, Rurouni Kenshin: Origins sets a high bar for live-action anime adaptations.
